Programs and Services

Family Service of South Lake County is dedicated to strengthening family life by providing preventative, educational and counseling services that enrich and encourage a positive family and community environment. We give you the tools and knowledge you need to live the life you want.

Mental Health professionals provide counseling in both English and Spanish. No one who needs our help is turned away because of inability to pay. Call us to find out more about:

Individual, couple and family therapy: Clients are offered a safe and confidential environment to talk. We help them set goals and guide them in finding positive solutions and healthier coping mechanisms. Clients range in age from children through the elderly.

Group counseling: Family Service has a long history of providing various theme- centered counseling groups, such as the “Men’s Changing Room” and “Women in Transition” groups. Please refer to Calendar of Events. We also offer self-helping parenting groups in collaboration with Illinois Parents Care and Share. Please refer to Calendar of Events for a listing of current groups.

Community education programs: Throughout the year we provide workshops, seminars, and lectures on the emotional problems impacting the mental health of families, individuals and workplaces. Topics have included better communication with family members, coping with the loss of a spouse, the demands on a caregiver.

Employee assistance programs: Family Service offers individual and family therapy, referral, and on-site consulation to employers and their employees.

Senior services: We provide consultation and training to local senior centers and counseling to seniors facing the unique changes and challenges brought on by age. Staff additionally assist family members, typically the adult children of the senior, in coping with their parent(s) changing needs. Limited case management and aid assistance is also available for Lake Forest/Lake Bluff residents. In-home family guidance service is used for homebound clients or when counseling in the context of the home environment is deemed appropriate.

Nuestro Center: Nuestro Center in Highwood is an on-site family resource center for Latinos living at the North Shore Estates housing complex. The Center helps Latino families adapt to a new culture and community and lead healthier, happier lives by providing a range of primary prevention and support services. We offer referrals and information, English-as-a-Second-Language classes for adults and employment assistance. Programs for children and teens include Homework Club, a free summer camp and an innovative teen leadership program.
